Practising yoga for better sex

I was a yoga skeptic. While I saw the benefits of a high-intensity workout or going for a hike, I never really got into yoga. But there is such a thing as yoga for better sex.

But I got dragged along to a class to support a friend who had just qualified as a yoga instructor. During the class – which was much harder on more core than I imagined – I found it really difficult to hold the poses. My mind would wander and I would lose concentration. But in the second session, I was much better. And when I got home later that I realized there may be some other benefits.

It turns out that yoga can actually benefit your sex life. By reducing stress and increasing focus and concentration, you can improve performance and stamina. It is also great for circulation and core strength. Even if you are not into yoga at all, I urge you to give it a try, as it can enhance your pleasure during sex.

How can yoga boost your sex life?

Sex therapist Gracie Landes puts it like this: “Because yoga helps people develop a sense of calmness, strength, stamina, agility, knowledge of their own bodies, and the ability to remain in the present moment, and make small adjustments, it can greatly enhance sexual performance and confidence, regardless of which asana (poses) are practiced.”

And if you think about this for a second it makes sense. Yoga has long been associated with reducing stress. And the less stressed your mind and body are, the better the sex is going to be. Additionally, due to the wide range of movements, yoga can improve blood circulation which can help erection quality. And yoga can also help focus and concentration which can improve your sexual experiences. Increasing your awareness and ability to be in the moment is sometimes called spritual sex or soul sex. This also includes other practices such as meditation for sex, or even tantric sex. In fact, all of these practices are closely related and can be combined.

Does it matter what type of yoga I do?

There are lots of different types of yoga such as Vinyasa, Bikram and Jivamukti. But perhaps Kundalini is the most famous when it comes to improving sexual performance. But all types of yoga provide similar benefits. If you are not sure which style you want to try, just check out a few videos or ask a friend or instructor for advice. As long as you are holding poses that require concentration, target your core, and open up your body, it will benefit you.

Should I take a yoga sex workshop?

You don’t have to. While there are specific workshops out there that focus on sex, any yoga class will help. Even if you don’t feel comfortable in a class environment, it doesn’t matter because there are so many great tutorials and classes online. Just search for a style that suits you and get yourself a yoga mat. Or if you enjoy the social side, look up a beginner’s class in your area. One benefit of having an instructor is you can ask specific questions about poses that can help you specifically and they can correct your poses directly.

What positions are particularly good for boosting sexual pleasure and performance?

Yoga, similar to mediation, is about boosting fitness and concentration. By holding a series of challenging poses, you develop your balance, coordination, core strength, flexibility, and concentration. By honing these skills, you will see benefits in the bedroom. So when looking for a yoga class our routine, you should look for one that covers a wide variety of poses that work the whole body.

5 Yoga postures for sex and boosting sexual performance

Here are five yoga postures for sex health that are great for improving male sexual performance and stamina. They work the right muscle groups.

1. Yoga sex pose: Cobra

So this position is actually one of the easiest poses to do. Lie on your stomach and place your hands underneath your shoulders. Push up to arch your back like a snake.

Why is this position good? 

“Cobra is one of the best spine and core-strengthening postures in yoga,” says yoga instructor Dean Pohlman, the founder of Man Flow Yoga. And if you have a strong core, you’re able to thrust and have more control over your pelvis which can improve sexual performance.

2. Yoga sex pose: Boat 

Although this is considered a beginner-friendly pose, it is definitely one of the most challenging poses in this list. So don’t worry if you don’t nail it right away. Basically, you lift your arms up and forwards and then your legs. You end up with both your arms and legs off the ground. Check the video for a more detailed overview.

Why is this pose good?

This pose develops pelvic floor muscles which can help improve orgasms and general sexual performance.

3. Yoga sex pose: Bridge

Lie on your back and rest your arms at your sides, palms facing up. Bend your knees and plant your feet hip-width apart, no more than a few inches away from glutes. Tighten your abs and engage the core as you prepare to lift your hips.

Why is this pose good?

“It stretches the pelvic region and tones the legs, as “squeezing your glutes together helps to improve ejaculation and blood flow in the genital area,” according to Pohlman.

4. Yoga sex pose: Standing Bow

From a standing position, lift your left foot behind you. Squeeze your leg towards your glutes and grab the inside of your heel with your left hand. Extend your right arm to increase the stretch and for added style points.

Why is this pose good?

“This is a great balancing exercise to increase hip mobility, stretch your chest and shoulders, and strengthen the spine. The combination of stretching and strengthening the core is great for endurance and engaging the pelvic floor,

5. Yoga sex pose: Locust Pose

Ok, this one is a little tougher – at least for me. Start by lying flat on your stomach with your hands by your sides. Now engage the core and lift your feet off the ground, and do the same with your hands. If done correctly you will look like a base jumper in a wingsuit – and feel just as cool!

Why is this pose good?

This pose is great for back flexibility and increases respiration and stamina.

Bonus position: Savasana

This is also known as the corpse pose. It is exactly how it sounds. You lie on your back with your hands flat and by your sides. Usually, this is done at the end of a yoga class to release muscle tension. Try this pose straight after orgasm. Holding a conscious pose after climax with your partner can help build intimacy. So avoid the urge to fidget and hold that pose for at least a couple of minutes or more. Check out the video to see a more advanced version of this asana that combines the pose with a leg stretch.
